National Achievement Scholarship Program

It’s an academic competition for meritorious African American students who are offered scholarships and grant money for their education. Established in 1964, it hosts 2 programs--- National Merit Program that can be applied through the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and National Achievement Program. The following are important points:

·         Must be a US citizen or lawfully residing permanently in the country

·         Must enroll as a high school student seeking to pursue school education or graduation degree

·         Will receive one monetary award from the NASC even if have qualified in both the programs

·         Grant amount of $2,500 will be awarded to eligible black students

The United Negro School Fund

African-American Single moms or students can apply for scholarships with the philanthropic organization that seeks to encourage higher education. Funds are offered to almost 39 private universities and schools that can be availed by black students. Essential points to note are:

·         Scholarships are offered in arts, business, politics, health care and other fields

·         Students attending both UNCF recognized and unrecognized schools can apply for scholarships

·         More than 450 named scholarships are available

Black Women in Sisterhood for Action

It’s a national nonprofit organization offering scholarships for educational and professional pursuits to black women and single mothers. Economically crunched women residing in the inner city and seeking for higher education can apply. Some points to note:

·         Offers social assistance and educational support to Black women

·         Offer all essential resources and opportunity for developments of talents, leadership skills and ideas

·         Nurtures management, team building and communication skills

The Julianne Malveaux Scholarship

The scholarship is reserved for the African American Women who are juniors and majoring in economics, journalism, public policy or other fields. Single moms or students need to be enrolled in a recognized school or university for their educational degrees. Important points to note are:

·         Students must have cumulative 3.0 GPA

·         Must be US citizens

·         Need to submit 1000 word essay stating about their professional career plans

National Science Foundation (NSF)

It is a US government agency that grants scholarships to eligible African American women and single mothers through its Women in Engineering and Computer and Information Science Awards program. NSF has an annual budget of $7.0 billion that is allocated for educational purposes.

·      It seeks to persuade women to attain higher degrees in computers, engineering and information science

·         Must be US citizens
